As I shared with you in my last post, I completed a Curriculum Barrier Template for both a hypothetical student and an actual student I have observed. Based on that template and administering a pre-assessment on one of my lessons (along with some self-reflection), I found a couple areas of UDL that I feel are strengths.
I believe I am effective at Providing Multiple Means of Representation; more specifically offering ways of customizing the display of information and offering alternatives for visual information. While it isn’t integrated in every lesson, I do often foster collaboration and community (Provide Multiple Means for Engagement).
I also found many areas I need to improve. I really need to improve upon Providing Multiple Means for Action and Expression; specifically I would like to use multiple tools for construction and composition. This is something I find daunting when there are so many different types of learners in one classroom. I believe that knowing what these areas that need improvement are and then also having my own classroom to apply them, are both key components.
You mentioned your area of strength is providing multiple means of representation. This is one of my areas of weakness. I'm thinking this will be difficult for me with the limited resources and funding in my school district. I will really have to push myself to find other ways of presenting information. Any suggestions besides traditional chart paper, chalkboard, lecture?
ReplyDeleteReflection is your first step Allison! I look forward to reading about how you expand your teaching tool box using many of the free resources available.
